Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
What Is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K is a non-surgical vision correction method that involves wearing specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses overnight to reshape the cornea. This allows clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses.
Benefits of Ortho-K
- Myopia Control – Proven to slow down myopia progression in children
- Daytime Spectacle-Free Vision – Ideal for sports and outdoor activities
- Alternative to LASIK – Non-invasive and reversible
- Dry Rye-Friendly – Unlike soft contact lenses, Ortho-K does not worsen dry eyes
Who Is Suitable for Ortho-K?
- Children aged 6 and above
- Myopia less than -9.00D and astigmatism less than -3.00D
- Children with rapidly progressing myopia
- Active individuals involved in sports, swimming, or water activities
- Individuals not suitable for LASIK surgery
- People with dry eyes who struggle with soft contact lenses
Pros & Cons of Ortho-K
Pros:
- Clear vision without daytime glasses or contact lenses
- Effective in slowing myopia progression
- Avoids dry eye discomfort caused by soft lenses
- Non-invasive and reversible
Cons:
- Not a permanent cure—vision returns if lenses are discontinued
- Regular follow-ups are necessary for safety and effectiveness
- Requires strict compliance to avoid infection risks
Scientific Evidence for Ortho-K
A two-year study in Japan (2011) with 92 myopic children found that those who wore Ortho-K lenses had significantly less eyeball elongation compared to those wearing glasses. This suggests that Ortho-K reduces the risk of myopia progression.
